Hi,

We're SY Tuitions!

Who We Are

SY Tuitions was started in 2009 by Sam from a passion for learning and teaching as well as recognising a need for better quality education. Fast forward to 2019, Sam partnered up with long-time friend and fellow educator Amy to offer more areas of support and expand SY Tuitions’ reach to more students. As our team continues to grow, we remain clear about our motivation to teach.

Learning should be engaging, relatable and purposeful.

What We Do

We specialise in face-to-face and online lessons for individuals and small groups.

We offer lessons for primary, high school and university for a wide range of subjects.

You won’t find a one size fits all approach here. All our lessons are designed specifically to the needs of each student to maximise learning outcomes.

Our Mission

We believe we need to raise the standard of education by not only teaching students what to learn, but also how to learn.

Our ultimate goal is to help students develop the necessary abilities and self-awareness to pursue their own goals.

Our Students

Our Values

Flexibility

We encourage students to be open in their learning by applying different methods to achieve results.

Independence

We teach students to think make decisions with their own judgement and critical thinking skills.

TROPHY

Resilience

We guide students to adapt to challenging times and bounce back from setbacks in learning and life.

Our Team

Sam Ye

Maths / Physics Tutor

Throughout my 15 years of tutoring, I have always emphasised individual growth and development both in knowledge and skills. I encourage my students to develop deeper understandings of their subject areas and grow a stronger set of analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. With well-developed knowledge and skills, my students will not only excel academically but also create future successes. My students adopt a culture of life-long learning and are instilled with a passion to pursue one’s dreams.

Hobbies: Building and modding mechanical keyboards #tactile gang

Fun fact: Maths is ACTUALLY my happy place. I can explain the production of an art painting in mathematical terms.

Amy Huang

Primary Education Tutor

I’m Amy, a teacher at a local Primary School and a tutor at SY Tuitions. I began teaching when I graduated in 2016 and have taught at many different schools across Adelaide. From grade 6 onwards, I always knew I wanted to be a teacher. I was inspired by my teacher at the time with this idea of ‘gaining knowledge to help others’. I value teaching content that is relatable, challenging, and practical. We are living in a world that is ever-growing and changing, therefore, our approaches to teaching needs to match with the needs of our students. I aim to make every learning opportunity meaningful and valuable so that all our students can succeed!

Hobbies: Eating at different places, cooking, road trips, watching dystopian tv shows and gym with friends.

Fun fact: I once won a bike helmet in Year 5 and had to wear it for an entire day at school.

Rory Shepherd

Biology / Chemistry Tutor

Having tutoring experience under my belt has allowed me to understand that the sciences can be hugely rewarding for students but also provide a substantial challenge if not taught correctly. This teaching approach is different for all students no matter the age or scientific discipline. Having undergone extensive study in many fields of STEM including neurosciences, human biology and chemistry to name a few, I understand that the ability to problem solve comes from a firm grasp of the key concepts and ideas. With my guidance, students will form the ability to problem solve and develop deeper understanding of important scientific concepts that will enable them to achieve their academic goals in a safe and enjoyable environment. Being a student myself also allows me to connect with students and see eye to eye on student life and the struggles of education.

Hobbies: Playing guitar, going to the gym, playing field hockey, watching Formula 1 and music production.

Fun fact: Rory never wears shorts. Ever.

Cabe Munneke

English / Academic Writing Tutor

As an English tutor, I have found the pleasure of aiding students in understanding the maze of creative intricacies that is English and academic writing. Having embarked on a road full of writing and reading I understand the difficulties someone faces when looking down the barrel of a major assignment and the fear that may come with it. When I teach, I try to focus on inspiring creativity and joy when building an academic piece. While also keeping the piece’s academic integrity. I try to show my students how communication through writing can be both fulfilling and practical.

Hobbies: Surfing and creative writing.

Tristan Warrington

Biology / Chemistry Tutor

Spending time with my students and watching them achieve goals they believed to be impossible has been a heart-warming experience. I pride myself in building a personal connection with my students by providing each student with their own personalised lesson, creating a comfortable environment for students to voice their concerns and ask questions when they are uncertain. I currently study Pharmacy at the University of South Australia, a course which is extremely Biology and Chemistry dense, which allows me to have a better grasp on concepts that my peers struggled with throughout high school and how their lack of foundation is affecting them at a tertiary level. Being able to understand the concepts that students struggle with in university, due to a lack of understanding in high school, allows me to better coach my students and provide a much smoother transition into any future pathway they wish to embark on.

Hobbies: I enjoy playing games and travelling.

Fun fact: I have two dogs Muffin and Cookie.

Darcy Bald

ENGLISH / ACADEMIC WRITING TUTOR

In the modern world, we receive more information than ever before. My goal is to teach my students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers and analysts, so that no matter their pathway, they have the skills needed to succeed and thrive in our fast paced, ever-changing world. My own education journey studying English and the Social Sciences led me to a more holistic worldview that shaped me into a person who understands the value of education and being a life-long learner. I am studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education at the University of South Australia. I value the connections that stem from teaching, as no significant learning can occur without a significant relationship. My approach is tailoring lessons to each unique learner in order to show the multitude of benefits that stem from studying English.

Hobbies: watching and playing footy (massive nuffy), going camping and reading.

Fun Fact: I can play the harmonica.

Sammi La

ENGLISH TUTOR

Having recently started my journey navigating the daunting yet exciting journey of university, I now recognise the significance of having support in academia. Throughout my school life, I have, and continue to, observe, and acknowledge the great influence a mentor can have. I believe that having the drive and passion to learn, not only in a traditionally educational sense but life in general, is the key to evolving and growing oneself. Hence, I strive for my students to develop the skills to critically analyse and think deeply about the world around them. As the world continues to evolve, I want my students to be able to adapt and thrive, as someone who values learning, whether it be in a classroom, or wherever life takes them.

Hobbies: Watching reality tv shows, visiting aquariums, and rating restaurants.

Fun fact: I am left-handed and can play the clarinet.
